From the humble origins of a small fishing village known as Yerba Buena, San Francisco grew rapidly due to the California gold rush starting in 1848. Devastated by the 1906 earthquake, San Francisco was rebuilt quickly. Long enjoying a bohemian reputation, the city became a counterculture magnet in the second half of the 20th century. From Art Deco to The Grateful Dead, and the center of the dot-com boom at the end of the century, there has never been a dull moment in this picturesque city by the Bay.
  • Itinerary

DAY1 Los Angeles - Santa Barbara - Solvang - San Francisco (425 miles)

In the morning, we’ll visit the relaxing Danish immigrant town of Solvang. The word Solvang in Danish can be translated as "sunny countryside", which in fact is true for almost the entire year. While in Solvang, enjoy famous Danish pastries, cookies, and chocolates; wander the streets and charming wooden, cottage-style architecture that brings thousands of tourists (including royalty!) to visit each year. After lunch, we’ll return north to the Bay Area and stay overnight in San Francisco.
Standard Hotel: Best Western Grosvenor, SFO / La Quinta Inn & Suites Airport West at SFO or similar

DAY2 San Francisco - Redwood National Forest - Eureka Redwood National Forest (271 miles)

From the San Francisco, we head north and drive through California's wine country, Napa Valley, on the way to Redwood National Forest, home to the world's tallest trees (old growth coast Redwoods), from which the park takes its name. These trees can live to be 2000 years old and grow to over 300 feet tall. Spruce, hemlock, Douglas-fir, berry bushes, and sword ferns create a tiered canopy and under story below the towers above. We’ll enter in the afternoon to visit landmarks that include: the Chandelier Tree, the Tree Shop, Founder's Tree Grove, and the Avenue of Giants. At night, we’ll stay in the nearby town of Eureka, California.
Standard Hotel: Red Lion Hotel, Eureka, CA or similar

DAY3 Eureka - Crater Lake - Klamath Falls (339 miles)

This morning we depart Eureka early to make our way to our next destination. There are few places on earth that can command overwhelming awe from observers, but Crater Lake, in south central Oregon, certainly does. As mysterious as it is beautiful, Crater Lake is the largest volcanic lake in the world, and descriptions can never prepare visitors for their first breathtaking look from the brink of the 6 mile wide caldera which was created by the eruption and collapse of Mt. Mazama almost 7,000 years ago. Even seasoned travelers gasp at the grand twenty-mile circle of cliffs, tinted in subtle shades and fringed with hemlock, fir, and pine: all this reflected in a lake of indescribable blue. We’ll stay overnight in Klamath Falls, about an hour’s drive from Crater Lake.
Standard Hotel: Days Inn Klamath Falls, Klamath Falls, OR or similar

DAY4 Klamath Falls - Lava Beds National Monument - San Francisco (354 miles)

Departing Klamath Falls in the morning, we’ll spend our final day at the massive Lava Beds National Monument. Encompassing 46,000 acres of terrain, the park represents the largest total area covered by a volcanic formations in all of the Cascade Mountain Range. Volcanic eruptions on the Medicine Lake shield have created an incredibly rugged landscape punctuated by cinder cones, lava flows, spatter cones, lava tubes, caves, and pit craters. We’ll explore this almost alien landscape, and discover the integral role it played in Native American history in the area, with its fascinating and well-preserved Native American rock art, battlefields, and campsites. After our tour, we’ll return back to the San Francisco where we should arrive in the evening.
Standard Hotel: Best Western Grosvenor SFO or Crowne Plaza Milpitas or similar
