Day 1

Once guests have gathered and met with their tour guide, this tour will begin. Today, we will begin in the oldest part of the city, the French Quarter, and travel to the Ninth Ward, one of many New Orleans neighborhoods that was devastated by the flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina. Here, we will pass by Fats Domino's House, a legendary rock-'n'-roll pianists. Under the shady oak trees of Esplanade Avenue, we will retrace the route taken by carriages of yesteryear as they tried to escape the summer heat. Then, it's off to City Park, where we may visit the Morning Call Coffee Stand or the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Then we will make our way to the shores of Lake Pontchartrain to visit the New Canal Lighthouse. In the distance, we will be able to see the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the longest over-water bridge in the world.

New Orleans is a city famous for its neighborhoods, and we will travel through many of the most significant on our journey, like Faubourg Marginy, Faubourg St. John, Lakeview, Carrollton, and Uptown. In Carrollton, we will see the campus of Xavier University, the only historically black, Catholic university in the Western Hemisphere. Following the path of St. Charles Avenue, we will pass the campuses of Tulane University and Loyola University of New Orleans, located across from Audubon Park, as well as the exclusive Garden District. Afterwards, the tour will end. Please see "Departure and Return" for more detailed information regarding pickup and drop-off times and locations.

New Orleans, LA

The city known as the "Big Easy" is most famous for its colorful and exciting Mardi Gras celebration. Visitors will marvel at its distinctive Cajun culture and cuisine that is unlike anything else in the world.

French Quarter

The most famous area of New Orleans is also the oldest. Dating back to the city's founding in 1718, this National Historic Landmark district is known for its nightlife, restaurants, and celebrations. Its most famous locale is Bourbon Street.

Ninth Ward

This is one of New Orleans' distinctive districts, and one of the oldest neighborhoods of the city. Unfortunately, the area suffered a great deal because of the chaos caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Fats Domino's House

Fats Domino is an R&B pianist and was an early pioneer in rock and roll music. Visitors to the 9th Ward of New Orleans can visit his home and office.

Esplanade Avenue

This historic street features many of the oldest and loveliest mansions in New Orleans, most of which were built in the 19th century. In the past, it has been referred to as "millionaire's row."

City Park

Fifty percent larger than Central Park in New York City, City Park in New Orleans is one of the most visited urban parks in the United States. It is home to Live Oaks, which are characteristic trees of Louisiana.

Besthoff Sculpture Garden

Owned and operated by the New Orleans Museum of Art, this free-to-attend garden takes up five acres of City Park. There are over 50 sculptures inside by some of the country's most skilled artists.

New Canal Lighthouse

Built where the New Basin Canal joins with Lake Pontchartrain, this lighthouse guides sea vessels safely into the canals of New Orleans. In 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic places.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway

Made of two parallel bridges that stretch more than 23 miles across Lake Pontchartrain, this causeway greatly reduced the travel time between the two sides of the lake when it was first opened in 1956.

Carrollton

Carrollton is a historic neighborhood in New Orleans. It played a significant part in the American Civil War when it was captured by Union forces. Mahalia Jackson, a famous American gospel singer, was from this neighborhood.

Faubourg Marigny

This New Orleans neighborhood is known for its distinctive architecture. Elysian Fields Avenue, named for the street in the CHaps-Elysee in Paris, is the major traffic artery that cuts through the central part of the neighborhood.

Faubourg St. John

This neighborhood in New Orleans has been referred to in documents since the early 18th century. It has stately trees, many public parks, museums, bayou areas, restaurants, and fin shopping. It's famous attractions include the Pitot House.

Lakeview

A neighborhood in New Orleans, Lakeview is home to a few of the city's most visited public parks, like New Basin Canal Park and City Park. It is named because it overlooks Lake Pontchartrain to the north.

Uptown

This area of New Orleans sits directly on the Mississippi River, near the French Quarter. The historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places. Many famous musicians have called Uptown home, like trumpeter Louis Armstrong.

Xavier University of Louisiana

Opened in 1925, this university is the only historically black, Roman Catholic higher education institute in the United States. After Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, many students and faculty from XULA volunteered for the relief effort.

St. Charles Avenue

This major thoroughfare in New Orleans is famous for the exquisite mansions that line the street in the city's Uptown area. It extends downtown into the New Orleans Central Business District.

Tulane University

Originally founded as the Medical College of Louisiana to fight the spread of smallpox and other diseases, Tulane is one of New Orleans' premier private research institutions. It's mascot is the Green Wave and it is in Uptown New Orleans.

Loyola University New Orleans

The campus of this private Jesuit institution lies between that of Tulane University and Audubon Park in New Orleans. Founded in 1904, it is one of the premier Jesuit colleges in the Southern U.S.

Audubon Park

Located directly across from the campuses of Tulane and Loyola Universities, this park in New Orleans is famous for its bird-watching opportunities. It is a wonderfully picturesque place, featuring old oak trees and numerous fountains.

Garden District

Once, the area of New Orleans' Garden District was covered exclusively by plantations. Because of its many affluent mansions and historic houses, it is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Cruise Substitutions:
We reserves the right to substitute either vessel in place of the other (Steamboat NATCHEZ & Riverboat CITY OF NEW ORLEANS) for any reason, at any time. No refunds will be issued for vessel substitution. In the event of severe weather, unfavorable river conditions including river closures, breakdowns or any other cause beyond our control, the vessel is determined by the captain and unable to make the cruise as scheduled, we will arrange for a dockside event. No refunds for the above conditions.
