  • There are few places on earth that can command overwhelming awe from observers, but Crater Lake, in south central Oregon, certainly does. As mysterious as it is beautiful, stories of the deep blue lake can never prepare visitors for their first breathtaking look from the brink of this 6 mile wide caldera which was created by the eruption and collapse of Mt. Mazama almost 7,000 years ago. Even seasoned travelers gasp at the grand twenty-mile circle of cliffs, tinted in subtle shades and fringed with hemlock, fir, and pine: all this in a lake of indescribable blue.

DAY1 Bay Area - Redwood National Forest - Eureka Redwood National Forest: (365 miles)

From the Bay Area, we head north and drive through California's wine country, Napa Valley, on the way to Redwood National Forest, home to the world's tallest trees (old growth coast Redwoods), from which the park takes its name. These trees can live to be 2000 years old and grow to over 300 feet tall. Spruce, hemlock, Douglas-fir, berry bushes, and sword ferns create a tiered canopy and under story below the towers above. We’ll enter in the afternoon to visit landmarks that include: the Chandelier Tree, the Tree Shop, Founder's Tree Grove, and the Avenue of Giants. At night, we’ll stay in the nearby town of Eureka, California.
Standard Hotel: Red Lion Hotel, Eureka, CA or similar

DAY2 Eureka - Crater Lake - Klamath Falls: (331 miles)

This morning we depart Eureka early to make our way to our next destination. There are few places on earth that can command overwhelming awe from observers, but Crater Lake, in south central Oregon, certainly does. As mysterious as it is beautiful, Crater Lake is the largest volcanic lake in the world, and descriptions can never prepare visitors for their first breathtaking look from the brink of the 6 mile wide caldera which was created by the eruption and collapse of Mt. Mazama almost 7,000 years ago. Even seasoned travelers gasp at the grand twenty-mile circle of cliffs, tinted in subtle shades and fringed with hemlock, fir, and pine: all this reflected in a lake of indescribable blue. We’ll stay overnight in Klamath Falls, about an hour’s drive from Crater Lake.
Standard Hotel: Days Inn Klamath Falls, Klamath Falls, OR or similar

DAY3 Klamath Falls - Lava Beds National Monument - Bay Area: (396 miles)

Departing Klamath Falls in the morning, we’ll spend our final day at the massive Lava Beds National Monument. Encompassing 46,000 acres of terrain, the park represents the largest total area covered by a volcanic formations in all of the Cascade Mountain Range. Volcanic eruptions on the Medicine Lake shield have created an incredibly rugged landscape punctuated by cinder cones, lava flows, spatter cones, lava tubes, caves, and pit craters. We’ll explore this almost alien landscape, and discover the integral role it played in Native American history in the area, with its fascinating and well-preserved Native American rock art, battlefields, and campsites. After our tour, we’ll return back to the Bay Area where we should arrive in the evening.
