Day 1: Maui - Haleakala National Park (4 miles)

Haleakala is truly magnificent in the daytime hours while bathed in sunlight which brings its steep slopes to center stage and when endemic wildlife freely roam the landscape. Leisurely observe Nene geese in their native habitat and discover the secret of the rare Silversword plant.
We'll stop Makawao town where you can browse unique shops and galleries. Known for its sunny weather and relaxed vibe, Makawao is the place to be. Make a brief stop at Kula Marketplace for one-of-a-kind gift shopping and a light snack.

After a short walk past a meandering stream through a forest full of native Hawaiian plants, gaze high above at the iconic Iao Needle - a natural outcropping jutting from the mountain side; covered in emerald green vegetation and towering 1,200 feet over Iao valley. The valley is rich in history as a former ancient burial site for Hawaii's royalty.

Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands and has been called the "Best Island in the World." Popular spots on the island include Hāna Highway, Haleakalā National Park, and Wailea-Makena. More than two million people visit annually.

  • The Iao Valley on the western side of Maui is a National Natural Landmark. It is also park of a state park which is made up of the valley's dense rainforest. It is an important cultural locations to Hawaiians.

    Iao Valley State Monument will remain closed through June 26, 2026, as the park completes scheduled bridge repairs and improvements. During this time, there will be no parking or guest entry available.

This scenic national park on the island of Maui is home to Maui's highest peak. Rising 10.023 feet above sea level, Haleakala's graceful slopes can be seen from just about any point on the island.

  • Considered a sacred landscape by native Hawaiians, Haleakala is a volcano located on the island of Maui. It is a fascinating area where the land has been vastly influenced by overflowing lava.

  • Haleakala Visitor Center at 9,740 feet elevation was constructed in 1936 and is a small stone structure on the edge of a cliff.
