Cholula is best known for its Great Pyramid, with the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios sanctuary on top, as well as its numerous churches.
Also known as Tlachihualtepetl, it is a huge complex located in Cholula, Puebla, Mexico. It is the largest archaeological site of a pyramid (temple) in the New World, as well as the largest pyramid known to exist in the world today. The pyramid stands 55 metres above the surrounding plain, and in its final form it measured 450 by 450 metres. The pyramid is a temple that traditionally has been viewed as having been dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl.
San Francisco Acatepec Church, an 18th-century Baroque gem, famed for its Talavera-tiled facade and gilded wooden altarpieces. This "Talavera Church" blends indigenous craftsmanship with European design, forming Puebla's Baroque duo with Tonantzintla.
Santa MarÃa Tonantzintla Church, a 16th-century Baroque masterpiece, dazzles with golden interiors blending indigenous motifs. Known for its "Mestizo Baroque" style featuring angelic figures with native features.
Due to its history and architectural styles ranging from Renaissance to Mexican Baroque, the city was named a World Heritage Site in 1987. The city is also famous for mole poblano, chiles en nogada and Talavera pottery.
