After guests meet at the specified departure location, we will begin this tour. Today, we will travel back in time to Laura Plantation, an operating sugar farm built in 1805, which offers what has been called the "best history tour in the U.S." We will have the chance to visit 11 historic buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the slave cabins in which which the West-African folktales of Compare Lapin (later known as Br'er Rabbit) were recorded over 140 years ago. The tour of the plantation is based upon 5,000 pages of documents found in the French National Archives and upon Laura's memories of the Old Plantation Home, in which she details 250 years of true-life stories of the Creole men, women, and children who lived and worked here. Afterwards, we will return to the departure point, bringing an end to the tour. Please see "Departure and Return" for more detailed information regarding pickup and drop-off times and locations.
