Cairo, EGYPT
Cairo, Egypt's sprawling capital, is set on the Nile River. Nearby, Giza is site of the iconic pyramids and Great Sphinx, dating to the 26th century B.C.E. In Gezira Island's leafy Zamalek district, 187m Cairo Tower affords panoramic city views.
Great Sphinx of Giza
The Great Sphinx rises above the desert majestically as the tallest monolith statue in the world. It was built during the Old Kingdom of Egypt, usually dated between 2558-2532 BCE, under the reign of Pharaoh Khafra.
Giza, EGYPT
The third-largest city in Egypt and the capital of the Giza Governorate. It is located on the west bank of the Nile, 4.9 km southwest of central Cairo.
Giza pyramid complex
The Giza pyramid complex, also called the Giza Necropolis, is the site on the Giza Plateau in Egypt that includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza.
Sakkara, EGYPT
Sakkara is a massive ancient burial ground in Egypt. It once served as the Necropolis for the ancient capital of Memphis. Djoser's Setp Pyramid is the oldest stone building complex in known history.
Pyramid of Djoser
Lying in the necropolis to the northwest of the ancient city of Memphis is this step-pyramid, built in the 27th century BC for the deceased Pharaoh Djoser by his vizier, Imhotep.
Dahshur, EGYPT
A royal necropolis located in the desert on the west bank of the Nile. It is located approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) south of Cairo. It is known chiefly for several pyramids, two of which are among the oldest, largest and best preserved in Egypt, built from 2613 - 2589 BC.
Bent Pyramid
The Bent Pyramid rises from the desert at a 54-degree inclination, but the top section (above 47 metres) is built at the shallower angle of 43 degrees, lending the pyramid its very obvious 'bent' appearance. It is an unique example of early pyramid development in Egypt.
Red Pyramid
The largest one of the three major pyramids located at the Dahshur necropolis in Cairo, Egypt. Named for the rusty reddish hue of its red limestone stones, it is also the third largest Egyptian pyramid, after those of Khufu and Khafra at Giza. Local residents refer to the Red Pyramid as el-heram el-watwaat, meaning the Bat Pyramid.
