Guests will be picked up in Fortaleza to begin this tour. Please see "Departure and Return" for more detailed information regarding pickup and drop-off times and locations. On this city tour, we will discover the unique history of the beautiful city of Fortaleza, which grew from a small Portuguese colonial village. Today, the city is the 5th largest in the country. We will see parts of the city both young and old, as well as its most important buildings and areas: the Metropolitan Cathedral, Central Market, the President Castelo Branco Mausoleum, Martyr's Square, the Center of Tourism, the Statue of Iracema and the crafts fair on Meireles Beach, the Raft Harbor of Mucuripe Beach, and the famous Praia do Futuro. After the tour, guests will be returned to their hotels.

    Fortaleza is the state capital of Ceara, located in Northeastern Brazil. The city was one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

    Central Market

    The city of Fortaleza is known for its traditional handicrafts. This market in the center of the city serves to display the works of local artists. With four floors and plenty of shops, there is no shortage of interesting findings.

    Mausoleum of Castelo Branco

    This mausoleum and memorial in Fortaleza is dedicated to former president Castelo Branco, who gained his position as one of the leaders of a military coup in the 1960s.

    Meireles Beach

    One of the main tourist areas of Fortaleza, Meireles Beach is loaded with hotels, restaurants, and shops - busy all day long. There are many barracas, or beachfront restaurants, so visitors can eat right on the beach!

    Metropolitan Cathedral

    This large, 5,000-person capacity cathedral, built in the Gothic-Romanesque style, is the third largest in the country, and the seat of the Archdiocese of Fortaleza. Its twin off-white spires rise amongst the Fortaleza skyline.

    Mucuripe Beach

    One of the many beautiful beaches in Fortaleza, Mucuripe is home to the raft harbor, where local fishermen leave their jagandas, a type of local fishing boat. You can watch as they set these boats off to make a catch.

    Praia do Futuro

    Its name means the "Beach of the Future," this beach is not as busy as some of the others in the city. It has some of the most barracas, restaurants built right on the beach.

    Tourist Center

    Built in the city's old public jail, the tourism center is the the headquarters of Emcetur, the major tourism company in the state or Ceara. Here, you can tour the building and get information on the city's other sights.
