The New York side puts you closest to the water. The Maid of the Mist sails to the base of the falls, the Cave of the Winds walkways run alongside Bridal Veil Falls, and Goat Island sits between the American and Horseshoe falls. After dark the falls are lit in color. Boat and walkway are seasonal.
The US side — Niagara Falls, New York — puts you closest to the water: Niagara Falls State Park sits on the American bank, and both the Maid of the Mist boat and the Cave of the Winds walkways start from here. The Canadian side, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, gives the wide front-on view of the Horseshoe Falls, but reaching it means crossing an international border. Most short tours from New York stay on the US side.
A same-day round trip from New York exists, but the drive is several hours each way, which is why most travelers choose two days. A 2-day tour gives a full morning or afternoon at the falls plus one overnight nearby. Longer routes add cities on the same coach: three days reaches Washington DC and Philadelphia, and four to six days adds Boston, sometimes with the Thousand Islands or the Corning Museum of Glass.
If your tour stays on the US side you do not need a passport, though bring government-issued photo ID for hotel check-in. Itineraries crossing into Canada require a valid passport for every traveler, and entry requirements differ by nationality and by US immigration status — green card and visa holders should confirm their own before booking. Otherwise: comfortable walking shoes, and a waterproof layer for the boat and Cave of the Winds.
Late spring through early fall is the main season: the Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds operate in these months, and May to September is the busiest window, so book multi-day tours early. Winter tours still run — the falls partly freeze and the crowds thin out — but the boat does not operate. The nightly illumination runs year-round.
Niagara works well for multigenerational groups because the main viewpoints in Niagara Falls State Park are reached on level, paved paths. Cave of the Winds involves stairs and wooden decks, and the boat requires a queue and a gangway, so either can be skipped without leaving the group behind. On tours where activities are optional, older travelers can wait at the viewing areas instead.
Vegetarian meals are available on many multi-day tours that include Niagara Falls. Restaurant stops are arranged by the guide, so note your dietary preference when you book rather than on the day. Jain and other stricter requirements should be raised before departure so the operator can plan stops accordingly.
