San Francisco is compact enough that most city tours cover the main sights in one loop. The Golden Gate Bridge stands at the northwest corner of the peninsula, Fisherman's Wharf runs along the northern waterfront, and Chinatown sits a few blocks inland from it. Alcatraz is the exception — it lies out in the bay, so tours either pass it by boat or include a separate landing on the island.

Some do, and others pass the island by boat for views without going ashore. Landing on Alcatraz requires a ferry ticket and a timed entry slot, so tours that include it cost more and run to fixed departure times. San Francisco is cool year-round and rarely hot. Summer often brings morning fog along the coast and around the Golden Gate Bridge, which can clear by afternoon; September and October are usually the warmest and clearest months. Winter is mild but wetter. Layers are worth packing in any season, as temperatures shift between the coast, the city center and inland stops.
San Francisco is walkable but hilly, and city tours cover the distance between sights by coach rather than on foot. Boat trips on the bay give a seated view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz without walking. Many tours carry a Senior-Friendly label and are marked Moderate Activity. Longer routes out to Yosemite or the canyons involve extended time on the road each day.
