Four to five days is enough for one island, with time for the main sights and a free day. Six to seven days is the practical minimum for two or three islands, since each move costs most of a day once you allow for check-out, the flight and the transfer at the other end. Fewer days spread across more islands means more time in airports and less on the ground.

It depends on what you want to see. Oahu alone covers Pearl Harbor, Waikiki and the North Shore without any internal flights or repacking. Adding Maui or the Big Island brings landscapes Oahu does not have — a volcanic crater at sunrise, or active lava fields. If this is a first trip and time is short, one island done properly often beats three done quickly.

On island-hopping tours the flights are booked as part of the package, along with hotels and airport transfers on both ends. Flights between the islands are short, but the airport time either side is not, so each island change takes up a large part of a day. Baggage allowances on inter-island flights differ from mainland flights — check the tour page before packing.

Honolulu (HNL) on Oahu, for almost all multi-day tours — island-hopping routes start there and end there. Fly into the island's own airport only if you have booked day tours on that island alone: Kahului (OGG) for Maui, Lihue (LIH) for Kauai, and Hilo (ITO) or Kona (KOA) for the Big Island. Hawaii is warm year-round, so the season changes what you see rather than whether you can go. Winter brings large surf to the north shores, and humpback whales pass through the islands between roughly December and April. Summer is drier and calmer for swimming and snorkelling. Rain on the islands is local and brief — one side of an island can be wet while the other stays dry.

Staying on one island removes the repacking, early airport calls and transfers that come with island hopping, which matters most for older travelers. Hotel pickup on day tours means no getting to a meeting point. Where tours are based in Waikiki, the same hotel is kept throughout. Sunrise tours at Haleakalā start very early and reach high elevation, which is worth checking against the group.

Meals are not usually included on multi-day tours, and groups stop where travelers order individually. Some day tours include a meal — the Road to Hana and several buffet-inclusive tours do — and this is stated on the tour page. Note any dietary requirements when you book rather than on the day, so restaurant stops can be planned accordingly.
