How far is Banff from Calgary?

Banff is approximately 130 km (80 miles) west of Calgary, usually about 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Lake Louise is roughly another 60 km beyond Banff. Calgary International Airport (YYC) is a convenient gateway for travelers visiting the Canadian Rockies. Guided day tours and multi-day packages are available, but travel times depend on weather, traffic and pickup locations.

How many days do you need for the Canadian Rockies from Calgary?

One day is enough for selected highlights in Banff or Lake Louise. A 2- to 4-day tour allows more time for Banff, Yoho and nearby mountain attractions, usually with overnight stays. Five days or longer can cover broader itineraries that may include Jasper, the Icefields Parkway or additional national parks. Can you visit Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in one day from Calgary?

Yes, selected summer and early-fall tours combine Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in one day. Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round, and authorized shuttle and commercial tour access generally operates from June to mid-October, depending on conditions. Moraine Lake is not part of regular winter sightseeing tours. Lake Louise remains accessible year-round, subject to weather and road conditions.

Should you start a Canadian Rockies tour from Calgary or Vancouver?

When is the best time to visit the Canadian Rockies from Calgary?

Winter, roughly November through March, is suited to snowy scenery, frozen lakes, scenic gondola rides and selected ice walks. What is the Icefields Parkway, and can tours visit in winter?

The highway can be traveled in winter when conditions permit, but snow, avalanche control and temporary closures may affect itineraries. Ice Explorer and Glacier Skywalk activities operate seasonally and are not standard winter attractions. Only selected tours include the parkway.

What is the difference between Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail packages?

Rocky Mountaineer focuses on premium daylight sightseeing rail journeys, with panoramic windows and selected seasonal routes through western Canada. VIA Rail operates long-distance passenger services, including The Canadian, which travels between Vancouver and Toronto via Jasper and includes overnight rail travel. Packages advertised from Calgary may combine coach transfers, hotel stays and a train segment. Check the exact boarding station, rail portion, accommodation and ending city before booking.

What can you visit near Calgary besides Banff and Jasper?

Tour is times well . Bus are clean and nice It’s not too early start. I felt we didn’t rush and spot , we had enough time to explore and take pictures. Hotels were really good and in downtowns so you could enjoy the local atmosphere. You can opt out night tour and gondola but must take Take cruise for Malingne lake .

The Icefield experience was great, though very crowded. My advice is to dress in layers; because of the high elevation and wind, it felt below freezing even though the valley weather was in the high 80s. Also, the glacier water is absolutely freezing if you are brave enough to touch it! Overall, the 6-hour round trip from Calgary is well worth it, especially if you want to avoid driving.

The tour was very well organised. Raymond and Allen were great guides, friendly and entertaining! They made our trip comfortable and amazing.
