Day 1: Christchurch - Greymouth - Franz Josef(300 km)

Today we will begin with a ride on the TranzAlpine train. Check-in at the Christchurch Railway Station, then sit back to watch the South Island's most stunning scenery roll by just outside your window. We'll travel across the vast Canterbury Plains, cross winding ice-fed rivers and traverse the majestic Southern Alps via Arthur's Pass. The train journey ends on the West Coast in the historic gold mining town of Greymouth, where we will meet our driver guide and coach. From there, we will continue to the town of Franz Josef, where we will spend the night here.

Day 2: Franz Josef Glacier

We will enjoy a free day to explore the mighty Franz Josef Glacier. We will spend time hiking atop the glacier before unwinding in the thermal spa afterwards.

Day 3: Franz Josef - Wanaka(286 km)

Early in the morning, we will take a walk to the mirror-like Lake Matheson, stop at Fox Glacier, then travel through the mountainous Haast Pass and Makarora. After passing Lake Hawea, we will arrive in Wanaka in the late afternoon.

Day 4: Wanaka - Queenstown(67 km)

This morning, we will head out on a scenic bike ride around the lake before we make our way to Wanaka to cruise along the famous A.J. Hackett Bungy Site. Then, we will continue to Queenstown, known as the adventure capital of the world.

Today, we will depart early in the morning to get stunning views as we travel along Doubtful Sound in stunning Fiordland National Park, where we will take a three hour wilderness cruise and learn more about this incredible area.

We will have the entire day free to explore Queenstown or partake in some of the area's exciting activities.

Day 8: Queenstown - Mount Cook(204 km)

Early in the morning, we will depart from Queenstown and drive over the Lindis Pass through beautiful Mackenzie Country and past Lake Pukaki. Then, we will head north to Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain, arriving in the early afternoon.

Day 9: Mount Cook - Rangitata(48 km)

Departing from Mount Cook, we will make our way through a landscape made famous in the Lord of the Rings films. We'll stop to admire the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd, which is a famous photo stop. Then we could relax in the Tekapo hot pools, go snow tubing or ice skating or hike up to the Mt John observatory where you'll witness stunning views of the lake from above. After lunch, we will continue to our overnight stop in Rangitata Peel Forest. Tonight, we'll stay in one of Canterbury's original sheep stations.

Day 10: Rangitata - Christchurch

This morning we will have the opportunity to join a Lord of the Rings tour or to explore the stunning Peel Forest scenery on horseback. We'll arrive in Christchurch in the late afternoon, where our tour comes to an end.

  • Booking changes
    A fee may be charged for any revision or alteration made to a reservation after the booking is confirmed. Name changes or corrections may be treated as a cancellation and cancellation fees will apply. A change of tour date or tour itinerary may be treated as a cancellation, and normal cancellation fees will apply. Please be noted that we do not allow departure change 48 hours before departure.
  • Cancellations and Cancellation Fees
    Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed and pending bookings. Therefore, cancellation penalties and or fees will apply. Time of cancellation will be determined when notice is received and confirmed by our office. Notice of cancellation must be made directly to TakeTours by email or through web mail at Contact Us .
  • Cancellation penalties per person for tours
    (Notification day and departure day are not counted)
    8 days or more prior to departure - 20% of total purchase amount.
    3-7 days prior to departure - 50% of total purchase amount.
    Within 2 days prior to departure - 100% of total purchase amount.
    Day of departure or no show - 100% per person.
    Unused features are non-refundable. No shows forfeit entire payment.
    Trips require a minimum number of participants to avoid cancellation. We reserve the right to cancel a schedule trip to fully refund affected customers although tour companies will make every efforts to maintain the normal operation.
    The refund amount will be credited directly to your account. Or the refund can also be forwarded directly to your credit card with a 10% handling fee.
  • Itinerary Variations
    We constantly strives to improve tour itineraries and features. If such improvements can be made, or unforeseen circumstances beyond our control make changes necessary - we reserve the right to vary itineraries and to substitute hotels. At certain peak periods duplicate departures may operate, and sometimes in reverse order in which case hotels may vary from those stated on the itinerary pages.
  • Tour Cancellation:
    We reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule any tour departure in accordance with operating requirements or circumstances beyond its control. If cancellation is made any time prior to departure* of the tour, TakeTours' only liability will be to refund to the passenger the amount it has received for the tour booking. We will try to re-book the same or similar tour. Please note that we are not liable for any cancellation penalties incurred on any other travel arrangements including air tickets purchased separately from customers. We are not responsible for any other travel arrangements affected due to our cancellations.

  • A basic level of fitness is required for medium length walks.
  • What to Bring: Sturdy walking shoes (ankle high), swimming gear, hat and sunscreen, motion sickness tablets, water bottle, towel and toiletries, warm clothing and waterproof jacket, insect repellent, camera.
  • Luggage should be restricted to 15kg in a single bag, plus a small day pack.
