    Day 1

    Reykjavik - Selfoss - Vik - Vatnajokull - Jokulsarlon (324 km)

On your first day, you will leave the city lights of Reykjavík behind and set out to the countryside, where you will for instance drive past the shadow of Eyjafjallajökull; the infamous volcano ice cap that so memorably erupted back in 2010.

Your first stop will be at Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall with a drop of 60 metres; that you can enjoy from an alternative perspective by ascending behind it to gaze through its veil of cascading water. Next up is another waterfall, Skógafoss, that tumbles down the cliffs of a former coastline dating back to the last Ice Age.

As you continue down the south coast you will arrive at Reynisfjara Beach, a blanket of black sand and b currents, so make sure to stay away from the sneak waves as you marvel at what has been voted as one of the most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world.

The beach lines the coastal village Vík, where you will stop for refreshments and perhaps a chance to get to know the locals. Then it is time to get back on the road, where you will pass through the vast sand plains of the Skaftafell Nature Reserve before reaching the one and only Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

This lagoon is one of the most notable highlights of the entire country, where huge pieces of glacial ice gather to float in an ever-changing scenery of icy serenity. Make sure to look out for the adorable seals that reside in the lagoon, some of which are curious enough to pop their heads out of the water to say hello to visitors.

You'll arrive at the village Höfn around dinner time, after which you are free to head out and try the langoustine the fishing town is famous for. After dinner, you will hunt for the Northern Lights, a natural phenomenon that can never be guaranteed, but is sure to amaze whenever they decide to grace the night sky with their presence.

You'll spend the night at a local accommodation in the area of Höfn, gathering strengths for your ice-cave adventure the following day.
