We invite you to 'Step Back in Time'with us at the incredible volcanic island of Milos, one of the most beautiful places in the Greek Archipelago.
Our trip begins from Papafragas or the 'volcanic swimming pool'where we will wonder for a while at this picturesque location, where you can look down into the clear turquoise waters.
Milos played a crucial part in the pre-history of the Cyclades and specifically Phylakopithat is our next stop. We will introduce you this prehistoric position which remained an active settlement until 1000 BC.
A short drive from Phylakopi takes us to the famous Sarakiniko, the unique 'Lunar Landscape'. The beautiful spot is one of the island's many geological wonders and perhaps one of the most photographed places in Cyclades! We will take a wall down the inlet so you can experience this one of a kind beach and take some photos.
From there we will travel the road along the northern coast towards the picturesque Plakaand its cobbled streets and alleys. In the capital of Milos you will have the time to admire its traditional architecture and its stunning view of the sea from the veranda of Panagia Korfiatissa.
The next stop is at the outskirts of Trypiti, where the Catacombslay, a sacred place for Early Christianity, a Necropolis, and a resting place of estimated 2500 souls. Close to the Catacombs is the marble Roman Amphitheater, recently restored, which you can admire from a higher level that stands above it. There are still seven entire seat rows with a lovely view of the bay. Not far from this location, the site of the discovery of Venus de Milo in 1820 (now residing in the Louvre museum in Paris).
Itinerary:
- Papafragas Milos: Papafragas is a cluster of deep-sea inlets and sea caves. It is located at the base of pristine ravine that was shaped by volcanic activity.
- The Site of Phylakopi: Phylakopi is a settlement dating back to the Neolithic Period. While excavating archaeologists discovered tools made of obsidian, a volcanic glass similar to granite. Also that was the place where the 'Lady of Phylakopi' was discovered.
- Sarakiniko Beach Milos: Sarakiniko is an inlet of pure white rock formations sculpted by volcanic eruptions. It is a unique landscape!
- Plaka Milos: Plaka is a classic Cycladic Chora , with white stone houses and bougainvilleas, situated 250m above sea level.
- Roman Amphitheater: Placed on a slope below the picturesque village of Tripiti, the Ancient Theater is a well-preserved open-air marble theater, despite being slightly ruined throughout the years since it was first built during the Hellenistic period. It boasts a fantastic sight, as along with the theater and the nearby historic catacombs, you are also offered fantastic views towards the Aegean Sea and the harbor of Klima village.
