Union Square in San Francisco, California gets its name from its function as a location at which officials rallied Union support during the Civil War in the mid-1800s. Today its uses may not be quite so noble, but it is no less popular. The Union Square plaza itself and the surrounding neighborhoods have become a popular tourist spot due not only to the place's history, but also its strong theater presence and litany of shopping options.
