Itinerary
On arrival in Bucharest, broad, tree-lined boulevards lead you past Belle Époque façades and modern city blocks. As you make your way through Romania’s capital, you may notice ornate balconies overhead as traffic hums along the avenue. You join your Travel Director and fellow travelers for dinner at a local restaurant. As the evening settles in, you take your place at the table and begin your sixteen-day adventure across the Balkans.
Bucharest, Romania
Bucharest is the capital of Romania, as well as its cultural and economical center. Visitors to this country in the Balkans can see landmarks such as the Palace of the Parliament and the National Museum of Contemporary Art.
With your Local Specialist, you'll move from University Square to Revolution Square, pausing below the balcony of the former Communist Party headquarters. Inside the Palace of Parliament, crystal chandeliers scatter light across polished Romanian marble as you cross vast halls lined with carved wood and heavy drapes. At Bran Castle, a private dining experience awaits you in Queen Marie’s Tea House, the timber-framed retreat once used for receiving guests and afternoon tea. You wander through the castle’s heavy doors and follow narrow stairways into whitewashed chambers and dark timber corridors. The air cools against the thick stone walls as you examine medieval torture instruments, learn how Queen Marie transformed the fortress into a royal residence and hear how Bran became linked with Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula.

Along the Prahova Valley, you follow the Carpathians to Sinaia, where the steep roofs and turrets of Peleș Castle rise above the trees. Inside, jewel-toned stained glass colors the rooms as you pass woven tapestries, paintings and displays of armor, each space reflecting the tastes of Romania’s royal household. Your route continues through the mountains to Brașov, established in the 13th century after the Teutonic Knights fortified the region in 1211. In Council Square, you follow a ribbon of red-roofed houses with your Local Specialist, their painted façades surrounding the Black Church, with its dark stone and slender Gothic windows.

Crossing the Danube, you enter Bulgaria and continue to Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval City of the Tsars. The Yantra River curls through the gorge below as you take in tiers of terracotta roofs and painted houses scattered across the wooded slopes, with the faint rush of water echoing from the valley below. At your hotel, the murmur of the dining room and the clink of glassware accompany dinner on your first evening in Bulgaria.
Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
Known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, attracting many tourists with its unique architecture. During the Middle Ages, the city was among the main European centres of culture and gave its name to the architecture of the Tarnovo Artistic School, painting of the Tarnovo Artistic School, and to literature.
With your Local Specialist, you climb through the weathered gateways of Tsarevets Fortress, former stronghold of Bulgaria’s medieval rulers, before looking across the old capital and the Yantra Valley from its hilltop walls. In Arbanasi, you tour a 17th-century merchant’s house enclosed by high stone walls, exploring rooms that preserve details of the prosperous trading families who once lived here. Inside the Church of the Holy Nativity, ochre, crimson and blue figures fill the walls and vaulted ceiling as you linger over centuries-old frescoes. After crossing the Balkan Mountains, you explore Sofia with your Local Specialist, moving from St Sofia Church and the gold domes of St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to the red-brick Rotunda of St George, the city’s oldest preserved Roman building. This evening’s Optional Experience invites you to dine as Bulgarian folk music fills the room and dancers turn in richly embroidered costumes.

With the day at leisure, you may choose to leave Sofia for Rila Monastery, set high in the Rila Mountains between the Rilska and Drushlyavitsa rivers. Black-and-white arcades sweep around the courtyard as you look up at saints, angels and biblical scenes painted in scarlet, cobalt and gold. Founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, the monastery has remained a center of Bulgarian Orthodox faith and learning for more than a thousand years. You can linger beside its striped arches, follow the fine detail of the frescoes and breathe the clear mountain air before returning to Sofia.

Beyond the border, you explore Skopje with your Local Specialist beside the Vardar River, where tall glass towers catch the sky above broad squares, fountains and monumental statues. Crossing the centuries-old Stone Bridge, you trade the sweep of glass and open space for the Old Bazaar’s narrow stone lanes, lined with Ottoman inns, mosque domes and small workshops. The scent of mountain tea and dried herbs escapes from spice stalls, fine filigree glimmers in shop windows and cafe voices drift through open doorways.

The capital and largest city of North Macedonia. It is the country's political, cultural, economic, and academic center.
At Lake Mavrovo, you stop beside blue water stretching towards the mountains, with the soft lap of water along the shore. The lake is also known for the old Church of St. Nicholas, which can emerge from the water as levels fall. After crossing into Albania, you continue to Tirana, where boldly painted walls break up the capital's angular city blocks. In Skanderbeg Square, your Local Specialist shares the city's history. You might look from the bronze horseman at its center to the Clock Tower and the portico of Et'hem Bey Mosque, where painted cypress trees, waterfalls and arched bridges weave across the portico in delicate landscape scenes.
Mavrovo Lake, North Macedonia, Republic of

Tirana, Albania
Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania, located in the center of the country. It serves as the nation's political, economic, and cultural hub, featuring a mix of Ottoman, Italian, and communist-era architecture with colorful buildings and vibrant street life.
Along Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, you travel towards Budva as dark mountain slopes fold around blue coves and the sea flashes between bends in the road. Inside Stari Grad’s 15th-century ramparts, you slip through narrow limestone lanes, beneath arched passages and into small squares framed by shuttered stone houses. You may pause at a cafe table, listening to voices drift between the old walls, before setting out again to explore the churches, courtyards and waterfront at your own pace.
Budva, Montenegro
A Montenegrin town on the Adriatic Sea.The coastal area around Budva, called the Budva riviera, is the center of Montenegrin tourism, known for its well-preserved medieval walled city, sandy beaches and diverse nightlife. Budva is 2,500 years old, which makes it one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast.
As you reach Kotor at the innermost curve of its bay, the water flows between high rocky slopes and centuries-old fortifications. Within the UNESCO-listed old town, you thread through stone-paved streets that open onto intimate squares, passing medieval churches and former palaces of captains and shipowners. You may catch the chime of church bells over the tiled roofs before continuing along the Adriatic to Dubrovnik, where pale stone walls curve around the fortified port.
Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor has dropped an anchor between the gray mountains and the sea, and veiled its life behind the high and wide ramparts. Its bulwarks seem to have been eternally growing rock tendrils along the hill, up to the old fortress that overlooks the town. It is a dramatic town where the present lives in the maze of medieval churches, cathedrals, Venetian palaces and pillars. Kotor is made up of contrasts - the old squares with modern cafes, the sounds of serenade and live music, the echo of the footsteps down the narrow cobblestone alleys and the lazy purr of cats lying under the balconies with wrought iron railings, decorated with petunias.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.
With your Local Specialist, you begin beside Onofrio’s Fountain, where water streams from sixteen carved stone masks within Dubrovnik’s fortified old city. Along the polished limestone of the Stradun, you reach the Gothic-Renaissance Rector’s Palace, then study the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries, where cloistered arches and carved capitals are patterned with leaves and animals. The afternoon is yours, perhaps for an Optional Experience to Cavtat, where you may follow pine-shaded paths beside the Adriatic, catch the resinous scent of the trees and visit a local winery. This evening, your Dine-Around experience lets you choose from a selection of restaurants for dinner in Dubrovnik.

As you approach Stari Most with your Local Specialist, its single pale arch crosses the Neretva, painstakingly reconstructed using traditional techniques after the original bridge was destroyed during the 1990s conflict. Along Kujundžiluk, the 16th-century bazaar, you browse polished copperware and woven carpets while the tap of a hammer may sound from a nearby workshop. In Sarajevo, a local family opens their home to you for a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. At their table, you taste dishes prepared by your hosts as they speak about family life, Sarajevo’s resilience and the customs they are preserving for those who come after them.
Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Mostar it is the most important city in the Herzegovina region, serving as its cultural and economic capital. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country.

For your choice experience in Sarajevo, you may visit the Tunnel of Hope with a Bosnian War expert or join a conservation guide at the spring of the Bosna River. At the tunnel, you duck beneath low timber supports and hear how food, medicine and people traveled through this hand-dug passage below the airport runway during the siege. Alternatively, your MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience leads to Vrelo Bosne, where you cross small bridges over spring-fed channels and watch the water slip around wooded islets at the foot of Mount Igman. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend in Sarajevo as you wish.

Following the Drina towards Serbia, you trace the natural border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, watching its green current curl below wooded ridges and pale canyon walls. Through breaks in the forest, you may catch sight of the river deep in the valley, dark green in shadow and silver where the light reaches it. The mountains gradually open into gentler country as you continue towards Belgrade
Belgrade, Serbia
The capital and largest city of Serbia.
With your Local Specialist, you trace Belgrade from Terazije Street to Republic Square, where the National Museum and National Theater face one another across the square. Inside the Church of St Sava, you step beneath the vast dome, where gold mosaics glow above cool marble, their rich color unfurling across the great curve overhead. At Kalemegdan Fortress, you follow the old ramparts to the point where the Sava flows into the Danube, their currents widening beyond the city. With the afternoon free, you can enjoy Belgrade in your own way before finishing the day over dinner with your fellow travelers.

In the Middle East and South America, air-conditioned / air-ventilated motor coaches (or minibuses) without toilet facilities are used. If due to circumstances beyond our control coaches are used otherwise than as advertised, a refund of $10 per person will be made.

Hotel Accommodation: Prices are per person and based on two persons sharing a twin-bedded room with private bath or shower. When booking triple rooms please note that the third bed may be a 'roll-away' bed. Availability of triple rooms is limited. Note that single rooms in European hotels are generally smaller than twin-bedded rooms and European hotel standards, facilities and services provided may vary from those in other parts of the world and are often local in style.
Tour Director: Escorted tours are conducted in English only by a professional multi-lingual Tour Director.
Porterage & Luggage Allowance: Baggage handling for one suitcase per person on tour, at hotels, is included in the tour price. Due to limited coach capacity, this single bag should have dimensions not exceeding 30"x18"x10" (76x46x25cm) and weight not exceeding 50 lbs (23kg). A charge of up to US$5 per traveling day will be collected by the Tour Director if a second piece of baggage is carried, or if the suitcase exceeds the established weight and/or dimensions. However it cannot be guaranteed that more than one suitcase will be carried. Hand luggage should be one piece per person and should be limited in size (not exceeding 30x28x14cm or 12x11x6) so as to fit under your coach seat or in the small overhead shelf. These are the responsibility of each tour member and should be taken onto the motor coach with you. Please note that luggage with telescopic handles and wheels will not fit in the overhead compartments and can therefore not be accepted as carry-on luggage for safety reasons. Porterage at train stations is not included. We will not accept liability for any loss or damage to baggage or any of the passenger's belongings. Passengers should report any lost items to the Tour Director who will assist in completing a lost property form that can be used for any insurance claim in this matter. However, we cannot assist in locating any lost items once the passenger has returned home.
Tips and Taxes: All tips are included for services on tour provided by dining-room waiters, chambermaids and porters at hotels.
Airfair Exclusions: Airfares to and from your destination, except where specified, airport taxes and fees; passport and visa fees; airline fees for checked and/or excess baggage; airport transfers; insurances of all kinds; tips to Tour Directors, motor coach drivers, local city guides and cruise staff; gratuities on ferries, trains and cruise ships; porterage at train stations; laundry; phone calls; minibar; beverages; meals not detailed in the itinerary; optional excursions; and all items of a personal nature. The tour price also does not cover costs and expenses, including the return to your home, if you leave the tour at your own volition or due to illness, or as a consequence of official action by the government of any country visited.

We makes no representation or guarantees concerning reimbursements of funds paid by you under any insurance claim.

Travel Insurance: We recommend that all passengers purchase comprehensive travel insurance. Certain countries have a requirement for foreign visitors to have valid medical insurance on entry. We cannot be held responsible if a passenger is denied entry for being unable to provide details to the authorities of such insurance. We do not employ staff doctors or nurses. Should you need medical attention, it will be at local facilities, at your expense. We are not responsible for any costs incurred as a result of medical services, or for the quality of medical care or medical services you receive.
Complaints procedure: Should you have a complaint in respect of your vacation, you should inform your Tour Director/Representative immediately. If the matter cannot be resolved after the Tour Director's/Representative's best endeavors to do so during the holiday.

2. Where the passenger occupies a motorcoach seat fitted with a safety belt, neither the Operators nor their agents or co-operating organizations or service providers concerned will be liable for any injury, illness or death or for any loss or damages or claims whatsoever arising from any accident or incident, if the safety belt is not being worn at the time of such accident or incident.
3. Transportation companies, are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not on transportation or conveyances. We rely on international convention which may apply to the services provided by us, our suppliers or agents with respect to any claim of any nature brought by you against us as a result of the provision of those services. International conventions which apply may include: Warsaw Convention 1929, (as amended by Hague Protocol and Montreal Protocol) in relation to air travel, or Montreal Convention; the Berne Convention for rail travel; Athens Convention 1974 for carriage by sea; the Geneva Convention for carriage by road and the Paris Convention 1962 for Hotels. We are to be regarded as having all benefit of these conventions on limiting our liability in relation to any claim for death, injury, loss, damage and delay to passengers and luggage. Enrollment in and payment for a tour shall constitute agreement and acceptance by the passenger of the terms and conditions set forth in this brochure which cannot be varied except in writing by an officer of the Company.
4. In the case of computer or human billing error we reserve the right to re-invoice passengers with correct billing.
5. We are not responsible for omissions, printing and/or typographical errors, in brochures, on Internet sites correspondence or invoices or in any other media where such information may be presented. We reserve the right to make corrections as required. The terms and conditions listed remain in effect until replaced. These terms and conditions replace all previous versions.

International conventions which apply may include: Warsaw Convention 1929, (as amended by Hague Protocol and Montreal Protocol) in relation to air travel, or Montreal Convention; the Berne Convention for rail travel; Athens Convention 1974 for carriage by sea; the Geneva Convention for carriage by road and the Paris Convention 1962 for Hotels. We are to be regarded as having all benefit of these conventions on limiting our liability in relation to any claim for death, injury, loss, damage and delay to passengers and luggage. Enrollment in and payment for a tour shall constitute agreement and acceptance by the passenger of the terms and conditions set forth in this brochure which cannot be varied except in writing by an officer of the Company.

Passports are needed when traveling outside your home country. Your passport should be valid for 6 months beyond the conclusion of your trip.
You are responsible for obtaining all necessary visas prior to the departure of your tour. Depending on your nationality, you may need visas to enter certain countries included on your tour. Please note that obtaining visas can take up to six weeks prior to your departure. It is strongly advised that you consult your travel agent, and local Consulate or Embassy of the country you are visiting, well in advance to determine which visas you require and how to obtain them.
The meals on tour will provide you with a balanced diet and are based on local foods and menus. We can accommodate passengers who prefer a vegetarian diet and can assist with diabetic, gluten free and other medically recommended diets. Please advise at time of booking. We regret that we are unable to supply meals in accordance with strict religious requirements.
Most hotels do offer laundry service, and in some cities Laundromats are also available. However, it is a good idea to try and pack enough clothing without having to do laundry, as it can sometimes be costly and/or inconvenient.
Yes, your Tour Director will implement a seat rotation system, whereby passengers rotate seats on the coach daily. This allows for all passengers to experience the different views from various seats and maximize interaction.
We regret that no refunds can be made for absences from a tour, including but not limited to, missed meals or sightseeing.
Due to limited space on the motor coach, you are requested to bring one suitcase per person with the dimensions of 30in. x 18in. x 10in. (76cm x 46cm x 25cm) and weight not exceeding 23kg. You can also bring one piece of hand luggage, provided it is small enough to take on the coach and does not have telescope handles.
Yes, baggage handling is provided at no extra charge. One suitcase per person will be brought to your hotel room.
We have pre-paid certain tips and gratuities for you such as all baggage handling at hotels and ports. Tips to restaurant staff for meals are also included in the price of your tour.
Tips are customarily given to your Tour Director, Driver and Local Guides at your discretion. The recommended amounts are: Tour Directors US$4 per day, Drivers US$2.50 per day and Local Guides US$1 per day.
Yes, as long as it is fully collapsible, non-motorized and you are traveling with an able-bodied companion capable of pushing you in it. Please advise us when booking if you plan to bring a wheelchair.
