Even in a country were beautiful beaches are a given, Frances Beach stands out from the rest. You may even be forgiven for thinking you are seeing double on arrival as a coral reef a few metres from the strand creates the effect of a shoreline. But Frances is more than just a spectacular beach; it's a place that is the quintessence of the real Brazil and where friendly vendors sell local specialities. This enchanting excursion also includes a visit to Barra de Sao Miguel, where there is a wide choice of beach bars and diners.
Come along and enjoy a wonderful trip to one of the liveliest and most idyllic beaches along the southern Alagoas Coast. Wade into the clear turquoise waters, which cast a magical spell attracting visitors from far and wide. The offshore reefs help calm the waves and protect the inner shore, keeping the waters warm.
Pick a spot in the fine white sands, perhaps under the shade of a palm tree, and then run into those inviting waters. Chill out and rehydrate Brazilian style by drinking the coconut water straight from the fruit itself. Vendors sell their wares either at stalls or by hawking them with fresh fruit - there are coconuts trees on the beach - fresh oysters, corn on the cob and fritters among the many popular products on offer.
Afterwards, head to Barra de Sao Miguel, where the many restaurants offer an extensive menu of delicious regional dishes. As relaxing days at the seaside go, few can beat a day at Frances Beach.
The first leg of this sensory voyage begins with a scenic coastal drive over wetlands from Maceio to Barra de Sao Miguel. On arrival, board the schooner and sail out through the magnificent Lagoa do Roteiro, the estuary that separates Sao Miguel from Gunga beach (boat fee not included and must be paid locally).
After the atmospheric cruise, land at the earthly paradise of Gunga beach and begin a new phase of fun. Gunga is renowned for its soft white sands, warm turquoise waters, lush coconut groves and extraordinary beauty - so much so that it has been voted one of Brazil's 10 most beautiful beaches by a popular guidebook. The area boasts plenty of secluded coves, bays and strands. The beach is divided into two by coral reefs, with wilder waters beyond these. A dramatic effect is created by the cliffs that frame the beach.
There are a number of facilities on the beach as bars and restaurants compete with vendors to provide the coolest drinks and tastiest fish and shellfish. Among the optional activities available are surfing, windsurfing and jet-ski hire. Boat tours also offer to take you around the reefs so that you can see the abundant marine life of Gunga beach.
